Passionate about education and human behaviour, Meakaila Katz from Douglas has turned her dreams into reality with the help of a local scholarship programme. This support has enabled her to complete a Bachelor of Education in Languages, Social Science, and Life Skills at Sol Plaatje University and laid the foundation for her long-term goal of becoming a Clinical Psychologist.
“Teaching, to me, is an incredibly fulfilling job. Seeing how a learner can grow and overcome challenges brings me joy. I enjoy sharing knowledge and my expertise with others. I love interacting with people, educating, and simply want to do good in the world,” she shared.
Meakaila was awarded the scholarship in 2021 through the Boikanyo Solar Scholarship Programme, which supports local students within a 50km radius of the solar facility. The programme assists students who pass their matric examinations and qualify to study for an undergraduate degree or National Diploma at a recognised tertiary institution.
“The bursary granted me access to higher education and broke the cycle of limited opportunities. It empowered me to strive for a better life and eased the financial burden on my family. I believe it also set a positive example for my younger brother, encouraging him to do his best at school and pursue his own educational goals,” explained Meakaila.
Having graduated earlier this year, Meakaila is now teaching Afrikaans Home Language and Life Skills to Grades 6 to 8 learners at Moreson Intermediate School. But her journey is far from over. Her passion for understanding human behaviour and addressing social issues continues to grow, and she plans to further her studies in Clinical Psychology.
“I’ve always been drawn to helping people in meaningful ways. Combining teaching and psychology will allow me to support learners and communities on a broader scale,” she added.
The Boikanyo Solar Scholarship Programme provides full funding for the recipient’s chosen degree or diploma, including tuition fees, accommodation and meals, a book allowance, a monthly stipend, and a brand-new laptop. This initiative is a valuable opportunity for young people in the community who are determined to pursue higher education but lack access to adequate financial resources.
