55MW Boikanyo Solar is one part of Round 4 of the South African Government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) and one of four projects approved for the Northern Cape Province.
The solar plant, which connects to the close-by Siyancuma 132 kV switching station, comprises 184 822 solar modules and stands on 168 hectares of agricultural land, close to the town of Douglas.
The solar field is positioned on the remaining extent of portion 1 of Farm Kwartelspan No.25 within the Siyancuma Local Municipality.
The solar project achieved commercial operation in April 2021, less than 18 months after construction commenced, in November 2019.
Boikanyo Solar’s shareholders include African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM, a member of Old Mutual Alternative Investments) through its IDEAS Fund, Reatile Solar Power (RF) (Pty) Ltd, Phakwe Solar (RF) (Pty) Ltd, AREP (African Rainbow Energy and Power) and Cicada Community Trust.
