Solar Field

55MW Boikanyo Solar is one part of Round 4 of the South African Government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) and one of four projects approved for the Northern Cape Province.

The solar plant, which connects to the close-by Siyancuma 132 kV switching station, comprises 184 822 solar modules and stands on 168 hectares of agricultural land, close to the town of Douglas.

The solar field is positioned on the remaining extent of portion 1 of Farm Kwartelspan No.25 within the Siyancuma Local Municipality.

The solar project achieved commercial operation in April 2021, less than 18 months after construction commenced, in November 2019.

• The solar field is connected to the Siyancuma 132 kV switching station. It generates approximately 55MW of clean, renewable energy to the national grid, addressing the ongoing and increasing need for electricity in South Africa.
• The solar field produces enough green electricity to supply approximately 62 000 medium-sized South African homes, and in so doing avoids approximately 130 000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year when compared to traditional fossil fuel power fields.
• Boikanyo Solar positively impacts the communities in the Siyancuma Local Municipal area, including Douglas, Bongani and Breipaal.
