Boikanyo Solar is situated in the Northern Cape Province, the country’s leading renewable energy hub that boasts the highest number of clean power generating facilities in the country, due to its excellent solar and wind resources.

With over 184 000 solar modules harnessing the intense power of the sun, this 55MW solar project supplies South Africa with 152 284 MWh/year of much-needed green energy and benefits the local communities of the Siyancuma Local Municipality area, through its many economic development programmes.

Solar Field

55MW Boikanyo Solar is one part of Round 4 of the South African Government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) and one of four projects approved for the Northern Cape Province.

The solar plant, which connects to the close-by Siyancuma 132 kV switching station, comprises 184 822 solar modules and stands on 168 hectares of agricultural land, close to the town of Douglas.

Boikanyo Solar is focused on empowering and strengthening the local communities in and around the Siyancuma Local Municipality area in the Northern Cape Province, namely Douglas, Bongani and Breipaal.

The aim is to empower and build capacity of targeted communities through the funding of various socio-economic development (SED) and Enterprise Development (EnD) programmes that positively address local skills gaps and needs, and to empower the communities to be economically independent and take ownership of their future.
